Gina P. Douglas, A saddhu braves the icy water at the source of the Ganges, 1976.
From the book “The Ganges”, 1978.
“At the foot of the Gangotri glacier, high in the Western Himalayas, an icy stream emerges from a cave hung with icicles, called the hair of the god Vishnu. In the morning, pilgrims and holy men (saddhus), who have journeyed to this sacred place, bathe in the icy water, offering it three times to the sun as it rises over the snowy peaks. Some saddhus even camp out over the winter, in caves dug out of the snow, living on offerings made by pilgrims.”
